Visit to Learning Skills Academy (for special needs children)
Learning Skills Academy is ateam of Inter-disciplinary experts with children diagnosed on developmental disorders. Guided by international experts they blend clinical and technology expertise to improve quality of intervention treatment for our children.
The psychology students visited this Academy to get practical exposure into the developmental disorders. They were enthusiastic and curious about the procedures. They were first given a workshop by Ms Arushi, Therapist on the practices and services offered by the academy which involves Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Social Thinking procedures. During the presentation, she emphasized that how they encourage parents to visit the center and be part of intervention and practice those interventions for generalization at home.
The students were then directed to different rooms to observe children of 3-10 years of age with special needs and they observed the way the therapist was dealing with the child. The students also got a chance to interact with the children and closely understand them. They could see the psychological principles put to practice by increasing desirable behavior such as completion of chores, tasks or activities
Such experiential learning was a unique opportunity and the students looked forward to such visits in future as well.
